Building an Industry

Projects & Partnerships

ABP is not developing a single project. We are building a new industry. Our work in North Queensland encompasses large-scale plantation establishment, manufacturing facility development, biomass supply for green energy, engineered bamboo construction products, and partnerships with First Nations communities. The model is designed to be replicable across northern Australia.

Sovereign Bamboo Industry — North Queensland

ABP is developing plans for a large-scale commercial bamboo industry in the Townsville region of North Queensland. The region offers ideal growing conditions, existing industrial infrastructure, a skilled workforce transitioning from declining sugar, minerals, and forestry industries, and proximity to First Nations communities seeking meaningful economic partnership.

The project encompasses plantation establishment across multiple land parcels totalling thousands of hectares, a purpose-built manufacturing facility for engineered bamboo construction products, and biomass supply for green energy production. When operational, the project is expected to create over 200 jobs in the region, including permanent roles in plantation management, manufacturing, and operations, as well as seasonal harvest employment.

Green Energy & Biofuel Feedstock

ABP is in active discussions with partners in the green energy sector to supply bamboo biomass as feedstock for renewable fuel production. Bamboo fibre is a renewable, carbon-negative feedstock suitable for green methanol production for maritime decarbonisation, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and diesel replacement for off-grid equipment and power generation.

ABP’s plantation and harvest operations are being designed to meet the volume, quality, and reliability requirements of large-scale industrial offtake, with production timelines aligned to partner facility construction schedules.

Further detail will be added as partnerships are formalised and publicly announced.

Engineered Bamboo & Prefabricated Housing

ABP is developing the pathway to Australian-manufactured engineered bamboo construction products. Initial product focus includes beams, lintels, floor bearers, roof truss chords, and joists — the high-performance structural components where Australia is most dependent on imports. Plans also include bamboo prefabricated housing, with work currently underway on our first prototype.

This work is delivered in partnership with House of Bamboo, which provides established commercial distribution and specifier relationships across the Australian construction industry.

First Nations Partnerships

The Townsville region is home to several First Nations communities, with much of the land most suited to bamboo cultivation lying within their traditional country. ABP is committed to building genuine partnerships with these communities — not token engagement, but meaningful economic participation.

We are in active discussions with local and regional leaders about land partnerships, employment pathways, and community training programs. With First Nations Australians experiencing homelessness at 8.8 times the rate of non-Indigenous Australians, a bamboo industry offers the prospect of addressing both employment and shelter within the same communities, through the same enterprise.

Industry & Policy Development

ABP works closely with the Bamboo Society of Australia (BSA) on industry policy, including the integration of bamboo into the National Construction Code and other regulatory frameworks. A number of ABP executives sit on the BSA Board. ABP is also engaged with NSW Government through the Decarbonising Business Group on innovation and manufacturing opportunities.

Research & Acdemic Partnerships

ABP collaborates with universities and research institutions on bamboo science, construction engineering, and sustainability research. We welcome enquiries from researchers and institutions interested in partnering on bamboo-related projects.
Specific partnerships to be listed as they are formalised.
